Commerce, originally settled to be a resort town, does not have a centralized and historic downtown and contains a series of smaller unincorporated townships & villages; Union Lake, Wolverine Lake, Oakley Park, and Glengary. Because of this there are two school districts within the township: Walled Lake Consolidated Schools and Huron Valley Schools. 

 The township has recently seen a boom in population due to the location's rural setting and recreation areas, including most of Proud Lake Recreation Area and Cass Lake lake system. The Huron river runs north - south through the township along with having numerous lakes and nature preserves. Proud Lake Recreation Area has over 4,700 square acres and is located on the Huron River. The park has over 20 miles of nature trails that cover several diverse habitats. 

Proud Lake Recreation Area is popular year round for everyone from avid hikers to families with small children to skiers and snowboarders. At 1,280 acres and depths of over 120 feet, Cass Lake is Oakland County’s largest and deepest public lake system. The Cass Lake lake system is made up of Loon Lake (243 acres), Elizabeth Lake (363 acres), Sylvan Lake (532 acres). M-5, originally meant to link Interstate 275 and Interstate 75 back together, runs through Commerce. 

The plans to link 275 and 75 were scrapped due to difficulty the numerous lakes in the area presented. One of the most notable people from Commerce is David Hahn. When David was 17 he built a full and working nuclear reactor in his backyard.He had previously been awarded a merit badge in atomic energy and had become enthralled with chemistry. Hahn was awarded the rank of “Eagle Scout” shortly after his lab was discovered and dismantled.
